Every once in a while, I’ll come across a word that strikes my interest. When I was brainstorming topics for this year’s A to Z Challenge, I came across the word “xenophile.” The dictionary defines a xenophile as, “a person who is attracted to foreign people, cultures, or customs.”
Quite a fascinating word. I think as writers, we are xenophiles, in a way. What I mean is when we research customs and people we’ll use in our stories, we immerse ourselves in them. We have to in order to get a better grasp of our characters. We don’t want to base characters and their traditions on stereotypes. So we research to learn as much as we can. Thus, we become xenophiles.
What about you? Do you see yourself as a xenophile? Are there people or traditions you find fascinating?
