Good day, my writing and blogging friends.
It’s Wednesday, which means it’s Insecure Writer’s Support Group day. Can’t believe we’re a third of the way through the year. And Spring is in full bloom. And at least where I live, it’s finally feeling like Spring. The bees are out in full force. Allergies are flaring. And many of us are prepping the yards for the summer.
Talking about the season is rather appropriate. This month’s question is about seasons and how it relates to writing.
It’s spring! Does this season inspire you to write more than others, or not?
It’s kind of complicated. There are different ways to approach this question. I think the most obvious deals with mood.
I’m not a writer that really thinks about whether a season affects my word count or consistency of writing. I write whenever I feel like writing. Some days I write more words. Some days I write less. And some days, I don’t write anything at all. There are periods where I’ll go days without writing, but will pick it back up. I don’t think it has anything to do with the seasons.
That brings me to my next point. Throughout the year, I have an amount of activities that I do with my family. involve myself in with each season. Some seasons have more activities than others. In any eventIt mostly depends on what I have going on during the month. Like this summer, we’re planning a lot of activities with parents in our neighborhood so that the kids don’t go stir crazy. Also, I’m planning a family trip to visit relatives. So I probably will not be doing much writing over the summer.
As writers, we’re told that we don’t wait for inspiration to strike; we write whether or not we’re inspired. I believe this can be problematic. From my experience, it is true that when I free write, I am able to work through some hangups with a project, or if I’m feeling really motivated to do anything. At the same time, I can’t force myself to write if I don’t particularly feel like writing. I won’t be satisfied with the quality of work, especially if I’m in the middle of a WIP. I don’t believe it necessarily has anything to do with the season.
Perhaps one area where a season might inspire me to write is what’s in my story. In the past, I wrote stories with certain themes in mind related to the season, but I made the choice to do so. The last couple of months, I wrote stories with content related to Spring. Spring cleaning, “Showers and Flowers,” school-related activities, yard work. Those kind of events. I thought of the stories as fun projects to dabble in. I submitted one to a flash fiction blog thinking it wouldn’t get published, but it did. I may do something similar for Summer. There’s a lot that goes on over the summer, and I can use the activities I’ll participate in as inspiration for my stories. We’ll see what happens.
I can argue that seasons do inspire me to write. Maybe not so much with mood, but with what goes on in that time frame. I have a life outside of writing, like most writers do. As such, I have to plan out my writing schedule around the activities. There are periods that I don’t write. A couple of times, I went a few months without writing a single word. But I didn’t attribute it to any particular season; it was more due to being blocked and uninspired. But when I get inspired to write, it will come.
What about you? Do you feel inspired by the seasons? If so, how? In what way? Let me know in the comments.
Until next time…
